These inspiring and amazing students are the recipients of The Vinnie Cirino Memorial Scholarship. They embody the same dedication and love of the game that Vinnie had and we are happy to have them represent this scholarship. In 2017, we awarded the first scholarship to a WHS boy’s soccer player. Starting in 2018 we were able to add a second scholarship for a baseball player. The Scholarship Committee congratulates these student athletes on their great high school performances and wish them all the best in the challenges that lay ahead, being certain that with continued dedication they will succeed and achieve their goals. See below for our recipients through the years.

2017

Jensen Alvarado

was chosen unanimously by the committee, among other things, for his achievements through high school in academics, athletics, the many programs for which he has been doing volunteer work, and his deep passion for the game of soccer.

Jensen has been part of the WHS varsity soccer team, where he distinguished himself and was voted MVP and team captain in his freshman and senior years.

Jensen will be attending Merrimack College where he will be planning to specialize in Physical Therapy/Exercise Science which is a field he has great passion for.  He will be also playing in their men’s Division 2 soccer team in the coming fall.


2018

Roberto Cucci (Soccer) and Michael Divito (Baseball)

Roberto

Roberto was a four yer member of the soccer program at WHS on the J.V. and Varsity teams and was also part of a highly competitive soccer club. He had great academic achievements being part of the National Honors Society. Roberto also was active in his community with volunteer work. Roberto plans on attending Roger Williams University where he will major in legal studies in the hopes of becoming a lawyer one day.

Michael

Michael has a lifelong career in baseball including Warrendale Little League, Babe Ruth Baseball League, Waltham Junior Hawks AAU Baseball, Waltham Middle School Baseball, and WHS Baseball team. He challenged himself with AP and Honors classes and has a long list of volunteer work for several causes in the community. Michael plans on attending Stonehill College where he will major in Business. He plans on pursing intramural and club sports while at Stonehill.

2019

Cuthbert Emeka Thomas (Soccer) and Derek Mullane (Baseball)

Cuthbert

Cuthbert has been playing soccer all his life and played all four years at WHS and in the last year as a captain of the Varsity team. As an immigrant from Gambia, he strived hard to learn a new language and study in the United States and achieve his academic goals and be a role model for other children. Cuthbert will be majoring in Physical Therapy at Bridgewater State University.

Derek

Derek has been very active in various sports including baseball all of his life. He played all four years in the WHS baseball program. Sports have taught him a tremendous amount of life lessons and helped him learn about himself. He is very active in the community and participated in several charity organizations and events. He worked hard on his academics and was a member of the National Honors Society. Derek will be majoring in Biology at UMASS- Amherst.

2020

Michael Maione (Soccer) and Justin Moran (Baseball)

Michael

Michael has had both Academic and Athletic acheivements while at WHS. He was a member of the National Honors Society with several AP courses. He has been playing soccer all his life and was a member of the WHS soccer team all four years and was captain in both his Junior and Senior years. Michael will be majoring in accounting at UMASS- Amherst.

JUSTIN

Justin has played baseball all his life from T-Ball to Warrendale to Babe Ruth leagues. He played WHS baseball all four years and was named captain in his Senior year. Justin is also very active in the community in various charitable causes. Justin will be majoring in business at Stonehill College.

Alexander Amezquita (Soccer) and

Alexander

Alexander has worked very hard in his career at Whs to juggle music, sports and school. He is graduating with an additional diploma in the carpenter program. he aspires to be an entrepreneur and open is own construction business. he will be attending the wentworth institute of technology and majoring in construction management.

Mariano

Mariano has excelled in his time at whs, being a part of ap and honors classes, the National honors society, volunteer work, and multiple sports. he was one of the captains of the baseball team and plans to continue playing at the college level. Mariano will be attending umass-boston and majoring in exercise and health science with plans to be a physicians assistant. (pictured below)

Gabriella Has worked very hard during her four years at WHS, taking ap courses to prepare for college and being a member of the national honors society. She was also very active in the community and clubs, coaching younger kids at soccer, tutoring, being a freshmen mentor and Vp of the armenian club. Gabriella plans to attend Uconn in the fall where she will major in Biological sciences in the honors college.

Hamson

Hamson showed great COMMITMENT and dedication during his high school career. he worked hard to ACHIEVE entrance into the national honors society and was a member of the changemaker academy. there he strove to make a difference in his community by working with a local homeless shelter to feed, clothe and help the homeless. He wants to continue to make a difference in the lives of people by attending Mass Bay Comm College and majoring in nursing.

Trent

trent dedicated himself, during his time at whs, to excelling in his school work and in sports. he was accepted into the national honors society and was the captain of his baseball team. most importantly to trent was being dedicated to helping his family and younger brother. trent will continue to strive for excellence by attending Bentley college in the fall and majoring in finance.

Christina has dedicated herself to her studies and soccer throughout her time at whs. she was in National Honor’s society, captain of her soccer team, and helped coach youth soccer clinics. she has even had the opportunity to play soccer all over the us and overseas. we wish her luck as she continues her studies in finance at umass-boston.

Giovanni

giovanni has strived to excel at school and soccer throughout his life. he was the captain of his soccer team, member of the national honor’s society and in student government. we know he will continue to excel at uconn, where he will study biology in the honor’s program and one day go on to get his phd.

ian

ian has shown a great amount of commitment to his studies and baseball during his time at whs. he was the captain of the baseball team, member of the national honor’s society and helped to start a unified sports program at whs. His commitment will continue as he plays baseball and studies studies economics at babson college.

Lucas Fredette (Baseball)

Lucas has applied himself to being a top student AND ATHLETE during his years at WHS. He wAS IN HONORS AND AP CLASSES AND IN THE NATIONAL HONOR’S SOCIETY. hE WAS A BASEBALL LEGACY CAPTAIN HIS SENIOR YEAR AND WILL CONTINUE PLAYING BASEBALL NEXT YEAR FOR hUSSON uNIVERSITY, WHERE HE WILL MAJOR IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE.

Omar Benmrad (Boy’s Soccer)

omar has been dedicated to his studies at Whs, taking honors and AP courses and being a member of the National Honor’s society. He has been an asset to his soccer team and enjoyed helping the community as a referee. He will attend brandeis university in the fall, where he will major in international business-Marketing.

Abby Wilder (Girl’s Soccer)

abby has excelled in her time at WHS. She has pushed her self academically, taking honors and ap classes and being a member of the national Honor’s society. she has also pushed herself athletically. She was the captain of her soccer team her senior year, was the dcl league all-star for three years and was named the all state first team and all scholastic honor mention by the boston herald senior year. in the fall, she will continue her studies at saint anselm college, majoring in education.

we wish all three of these amazing student athletes the best of luck in their future endeavors.
